Don't Let Winter Freeze your Run Routine.
Finding the motivation to run on a frigid, snowy, just plain cold day can be tough. Here's some advice to keep moving and grooving, all winter long.
1. As always, set a goal. Whether it's shaping up to hit the slopes harder, take on a winter race, or just eating more holiday candy guilt-free, progressing toward a goal is motivating and rewarding.
2. Dress for success. The proper gear makes all the difference in cold weather running. High performance apparel from Brooks keeps you warm without added weight, while our Trail shoe collection will help with traction and waterproof comfort.
3. Be seen. Winter months mean shorter days so it's important to stay visible to cars and other dangerous elements when light is low. Brooks NightLife apparel and accessories feature high contrast, fluorescent colors and reflectivity to help you be seen.
4. Run in the sun. Getting outside during the warmest part of the day will give you a good dose of Vitamin D and stave off winter blues. Also, run against the wind for the first part of your run, that way the wind will be at your back when you're more sweaty and liable to get chilly.
5. Keep it fun. Set a route that tours all the neighborhood holiday lights or mix up your workout by running hills then sledding down them. Whatever gets you excited to keep running!
6. Hydrate. Cold air has a drying effect so it's important as ever to keep drinking your fluids.
7. There's no shame in a treadmill. If the cold is just too much to bear, hit the gym. The treadmill is a much safer alternative to dark and icy roads.
8. Buddy up. Having a running companion helps you get motivated to go, have fun on the run, and finish that extra large hot chocolate after.
9. Warm up before the run. Be sure to spend a little extra time warming up before heading out into the chill. This will help prevent injury and get you feeling the goodness of the run sooner.
10. Use your head. Our moms weren't lying when they said 40% of your heat escapes from you head. Cover yourself with a Brooks beanie to trap the heat waves in.
